Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride 2024

The Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, founded in 1999 by Selwyn Hardwick, began as a heartfelt response to personal tragedy. Motivated by the loss of his sister to cancer and his grandson’s battle with leukemia, Sel embarked on a mission to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute. Inspired during a road trip from Cairns, he envisioned a charity ride from Townsville to Cairns as a proactive way to support his grandson and others facing similar challenges.
Partnering with Andrew Abrahams from Better Bikes, Sel’s vision expanded into a community event, inviting riders of all levels to join the cause. The ride covers a distance of 374km, passing through picturesque landscapes and iconic locations.
Day 1 – Townsville to Ingham – 112 km
The journey begins in Townsville at the Mercure Inn on Woolcock Street, where riders gather and organize into groups. Departing for Ingham on the Bruce Highway, the route winds through Bluewater and Rollingstone before a lunch stop at Frosty Mango. After lunch, riders continue to Ingham, navigating undulating terrain through the cane fields, and rest for the night at the Ingham Showground’s Hall.
Day 2 – Ingham to Innisfail – 169 km
Day two takes riders from Ingham to Innisfail, starting with a challenging ascent up the Cardwell Range. Encouraged by fellow riders and support teams, cyclists push through to Tully for lunch and then on to Innisfail, where they stay at the Innisfail PCYC Hall.
Day 3 – Innisfail to Cairns – 93 km
The final leg on day three covers 93km from Innisfail to Cairns, with riders motivated by the proximity of their goal. Passing through Mirriwinni, Mt Bellenden Ker, Deeral, and Gordonvale, cyclists finally arrive at the Cairns Showgrounds. Cheers and celebrations greet the riders, who enjoy an early lunch before a formal welcoming ceremony and evening festivities.
The Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride is not just a physical challenge; it’s a journey of support, community, and hope, bringing people together for a meaningful cause.
