Drive 65D II

After years of research and development, our engineers have made advancements in maximizing a rim’s durability and responsiveness without adding material, allowing for the next generation of Drive wheels to remain lightweight, despite increasing inner and outer rim widths to support wider tires.

The Drive 65D II is the epitome of aero. It’s deep section rims significantly reduce drag, making it ideal for the flats and rolling hills, weighing just 1460 grams for the pair. The U/V-shaped rim profile improves lateral airflow, increasing stability on fast descents and in windy conditions.

In addition to optimizing the rim design, the second-generation Drive wheels feature several upgrades: a hooked rim for improved aerodynamics, comfort, and traction; high-quality S&S ceramic bearings; 4.5mm carbon spokes; and our one-of-a-kind Kinetic hub with a conical ratchet design.

RIM

Drive II wheelsets feature wider, 23mm inner widths and 31mm outer widths, making them aerodynamically optimized for 28c and 30c tires. Wider tires allow for a more comfortable ride, as they can be run at lower pressures. The wider inner rim width gives wider tires a better shape, improving grip and comfort, while the 31mm external widths improve the overall aerodynamics when paired with 28mm or 30mm tires, which are now the norm in road cycling.

What makes our clincher, tubeless-ready rims unique is that we use a hooked design. We see the benefits and drawbacks of standard hooked as well as hookless rims and have found a way to offer the best of both worlds. Our hooked design allows for the aerodynamic, durability, and optimal tire shape that hookless rims provide, with the security, tire compatibility, and ability to run higher pressures that a clincher can offer.

Despite the increase in widths, we were able to keep the same weights as the original Drive wheelsets. This was accomplished in part due to our new advancements in our UNI carbon fiber layup technology.

KINETIC RATCHET HUB

The Drive II road wheelsets features our brand new, Kinetic hub, which uses a 50T star ratchet mechanism, instead of the previous pawl-ratchet mechanism. Kinetic’s ratchets are machined in a conical shape, allowing for increased engagement surface area which increases longevity. A new, stronger spring reduces the likelihood of skipping and slipping, ensuring a consistent riding experience.

The hub also features a new waterproof seal reducing the likelihood of ingress. A stronger spring has also been chosen, which significantly reduces the incidence of ratchets slipping and skipping when pedaling.

Just like all of our other designs, the Kinetic hub is made by us using 5-axis CNC machines. High-grade precision S&S ceramic bearings were chosen to improve their lifespan and reduce rolling resistance, saving you precious watts. While having high quality bearings is important, a perfect bearing seat fit is essential for optimal performance. Our CNC machines precisely machine bearing seats to 0.02mm tolerances, guaranteeing exceptionally low rolling resistance and improving longevity.

TESTING

Laboratory Tests
Each wheelset undergoes more than 20 laboratory tests at our factory, covering durability, longevity, and stiffness. We also ensure every wheel passes the UCI Vertical Impact Test, certifying it for use in top-tier professional racing.

Silverstone Wind Tunnel Test
We tested the Drive II at the Silverstone Engineering Hub in the UK. The results showed a 2.84% reduction in CdA (Coefficient of Drag Area), translating to less air resistance and higher speed at the same power output. At a -15° yaw angle, the Drive 50D II saved 5.2 watts compared to its predecessor at the same speed.

CFD Simulation & Real-World Testing
In addition to lab testing, we place a strong focus on aerodynamics and real-world performance. Our engineers run hundreds of hours of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations during the design phase to optimize aerodynamics before building the first prototype.
We also conduct extensive real-world testing with our in-house team and sponsored UCI pro cycling teams. Their feedback, based on hundreds of thousands of kilometers of riding experience with various wheelsets, helps us continuously refine and improve our products.

Which brands’ freehubs are compatible with Drive wheelsets?+

Since the hubs used in Drive wheels are manufactured in Elitewheels’ factory, freehubs from other brands are incompatible. The hubs used in Drive wheels have passed our 20,000km test. As long as you ride in normal conditions, the possibility of the freehub getting damaged is very low. If you ride in extreme conditions, we recommend you clean the freehub every 3000km.

When should I choose the Shimano MSR 12S freehub option?+

The MSR freehub option on the Drive II wheels is compatible with Shimano Micro Spline MTB/Gravel 12S cassettes. For example, if you are using the new Shimano RX820 1×12 groupset with the CS-M8100-12 cassette, please choose the Shimano MSR 12S freehub option.

Which cassettes require the 1.85mm spacer?+

1.85mm spacers are required for Shimano 9/10-speed cassettes fitted on Shimano HG freehubs. Spacers are also required when pairing most SRAM XD MTB cassettes with SRAM XDR freehubs.

Can I use disc brake wheels on my QR (quick release) compatible frame?+

Yes. Please click the link and add the Thru-axles to QR Adapters to your cart with the wheelset.

Why don't our disc brake wheelsets come with thru-axles?+

Unlike quick releases, there are many thru-axle standards. What you need depends on your frame's make and model. There are many thread types, such as M12x1.0mm, M12x1.5mm, M12x1.75mm, etc... For example, M12 means the outer thread diameter is 12mm, and 1.0mm means the thread pitch is 1.0mm. Because of the variety of standards, we do not provide thru-axles. If you need a new thru-axle(s), please contact your frame brand for more information.

Is there an internal nipple option?+

Internal nipples are not available because the nipples for carbon spokes are specially processed. The contact angle between spokes and spoke holes is extremely important. Spokes should not directly come into contact the rim directly, otherwise there would be a high likelihood of having spoke break.

Can I change to 6-bolt?+

Yes. Drive wheels use center lock hubs by default, but if you want to use 6-bolt, please click the link and add the Center-lock to 6-bolt Adapters to your cart with the wheelset.

Are ceramic bearings easily broken?+

As all our our hubs have high-precision manufacturing tolerances, bearing play is significantly reduced. Because of this, the likelihood of bearings being damaged is extremely low.

What does the rider weight limit include?+

The rider weight limit includes the total weight of the rider, bike, gear, and any other accessories. Please do not exceed this weight.

What tire pressures should I run?+

The best tire pressure for you depends on many factors: the rim width, type of bike and tires, rider weight, road conditions and weather conditions. Please see our user guide for more information.

How strong are your carbon rims? What happens if I break one?+

Every one of our carbon rims has been strictly tested before shipment. We are so confident in the quality of our rims that we offer a 3-year warranty on every one. To learn more, please refer to our warranty page.

Where can I find information on ordering and shipping?+

Please visit our FAQ page here.

Essential Safety Information+

For essential safety information, please read our Consumer Advice.

What happens if a carbon spoke breaks?+

Our threaded carbon spokes have been designed to last. In the event that a carbon spoke breaks, replacement is easy. Each wheel comes with replacement spokes that can be replaced like traditional steel spokes. For more information, please see this article. For information on where to get spokes replaced, please contact our customer service.

Are carbon spokes covered under warranty?+

Our standard 3-year warranty covers carbon spokes if they are damaged by non-external factors. This means they are only covered if there is a manufacturing defect. Click here for more information on our warranty.

  1. Alex –

    –Context–
I run these on a 2025 Trek Madone SL 6 Gen 8. They replaced my Bontrager Aeolus Elite 35 carbon wheelset. I ride short, harder sessions on mostly flat coastal roads.

    –Buying and delivery–
Customer service was excellent. Replies were fast and clear, shipping updates were transparent, the wheels arrived well packed, and delivery to Australia was quick.

    –Experience–
They look the part. Deep, clean, and they drew comments from the mechanics who fitted them. Install was straightforward; the shop had no issues. The difference from the 35 mm wheels was obvious from the first ride. On the flats and descents, they get up to speed with ease and hold pace well. On hills, they perform well given how lightweight they are and how easily they roll. The freehub is audible (but not too overt) and has a distinct sound. I actually like it and find it gives pedestrians a bit of warning when I’m coming through.

My first ride was in a 20kph crosswind. While the rear was fine, the front needed careful control, but that is to be expected given their depth and how lightweight they are. My next ride was in a tailwind, and they did not disappoint. Insanely fast and enjoyable.

    –Verdict–
A strong upgrade. Service, packaging, and the way they ride all lined up. Very happy and would reocmmend to anyone looking at deep carbon wheels!

      Hi Alex,

Thank you so much for this thorough, well-structured review!

We’re thrilled to hear these wheels make such a noticeable upgrade from your previous Bontrager set on your Trek Madone. It’s great that you liked our customer support, transparent shipping and solid packaging.

We appreciate your honest notes on crosswind handling, which is typical for deep-section carbon wheels. It makes us happy that the wheels deliver fantastic speed and fun during your coastal rides.

Enjoy all your fast sessions on the roads in Australia.

  2. Henri Schoen –

    Hello Elitewheels-Family,

I’m absolutely impressed with these wheels.
I personally ride a 65/65 setup on my own build, and after such a great experience with it, I also bought a 50/65 setup for a friend.
We are both extremely happy with them.

What stands out immediately is the incredibly direct and responsive ride feel.
The wheels feel stiff, precise and very efficient, and the acceleration is fantastic.
Every effort seems to translate instantly into forward motion, which makes the bike feel noticeably fast and lively.

The looks are another big highlight.
Both the 65/65 and the 50/65 setups look absolutely stunning and give the bike a very aggressive, high-end appearance.
The deep 65 mm rims in particular look fantastic at speed.

And then there’s the freehub – we absolutely love it!
It’s loud, distinctive and instantly recognizable.
Definitely not a wheelset for anyone looking for a silent freehub, but for us the sound is part of the experience and gives these wheels even more character.

Overall, we couldn’t be happier with our wheelsets.
Excellent acceleration, a direct and precise riding feel, fantastic looks and that unmistakable freehub sound.
Both the 65/65 and 50/65 combinations have been a great choice and are an absolute pleasure to ride.

    Highly recommended!
