Drive Mixed Depth Rim Brake

Having a mixed depth wheelset can improve the aerodynamics and handling of a bike. A shallower front wheel can make a bike easier to control as it is more resistant to crosswinds, while a deep section rear wheel can reduce aerodynamic drag. Mixed depth wheels are the favorite or many pro and experienced riders, as it can make for a more balanced ride.

Now we give riders the choice to customize their own wheelset, allowing for the front and rear wheel rim depths to be selected independently.

*To ensure that the wheels are compatible with your bike and to prevent any rubbing, the brake pads should be at least 2mm away from the rim’s braking surface on both sides. We recommend checking with your frame and brake caliper manufacturers for the maximum tire clearance before placing your order.

DrivDRIVE RIMS

At Elitewheels, we design our Drive wheels to match the needs of professional riders. In order to deliver the best, we incorporate our own in-house UNI carbon fiber, a specific ratio of T700 and T800 carbon fiber (*Read more about UNI technology), making it not only strong, but also especially light and stiff. The U/V-shaped rim profile of the Drive RB Mixed Depth wheels was chosen to make the rims aero as well as stable in windy conditions. The wheels are designed to accommodate up to 30c tires for those looking for more grip and comfort.

CARBON SPOKES

What separates Drive wheels from most others is its use of high-modulus carbon spokes. The 3.2mm wide aero bladed spokes offer a 7% increase lateral response as compared to equivalent steel spokes. The spokes are mechanically secured, giving the benefit of being able to be trued and maintained just like regular spokes. Anti-loosening technology is also incorporated into the spoke nipples. The threads built into the nipples give it a double-locking effect.

PERFORMANCE HUB

To get the most out of carbon fiber spokes, we specifically designed the hubs with high flanges to further increase lateral stiffness and improve handling. Elitewheels manufactures its own hubs with Fanuc CNC machines, allowing for a tolerance of 0.02mm. This accuracy is important for bearing longevity and low rolling resistance.

CERAMIC BEARINGS

The Drive front hub uses two 6803 mixed ceramic bearings. The Drive rear hub uses one 6903 and three 6803 mixed ceramic bearings. These large bearings offer better rigidity. The use of mixed ceramic bearings will allow you to have a more efficient bike, saving you precious watts.

BRAKE SURFACE

The Drive RB Mixed Depth uses a blend of 270 ℃, high-temperature resin, developed by Elitewheels, and Japanese Toray T800 carbon fiber for the brake surface. This heat resistance ensures excellent braking performance even on long, steep descents.

It features an advanced 3K 45° twill weave carbon fiber brake surface, engineered for superior braking performance and durability. Unlike traditional unidirectional (UD) layups, the cross-oriented fiber structure delivers balanced resistance to both lateral and longitudinal forces, ensuring consistent power and control in harsh conditions.

The 45° angled weave promotes efficient heat dissipation, effectively limiting localized overheating and maintaining stable braking efficiency at high temperatures. Additionally, the interlaced fiber pattern enhances wear resistance, reducing abrasion from brake pads while inhibiting crack propagation for longer-lasting performance.

Paired with a precisely textured friction surface, this system contributes to reliable, fade-free braking, ride after ride.

What is the weight of different mixed depth wheelsets?+

DRIVE 40/50V: 1285±30g DRIVE 50/65V: 1415±30g

What is the inner width of different rims?+

40mm rim with 19.5mm inner width 50mm rim with 19.5mm inner width 65mm rim with 21mm inner width

Is this wheelset UCI approved?+

Yes, the Drive 50V and Drive 40V are both UCI approved.

Which brands’ freehubs are compatible with Drive wheelsets?+

Since the hubs used in Drive wheels are manufactured in Elitewheels’ factory, freehubs from other brands are incompatible. The hubs used in Drive wheels have passed our 20,000km test. As long as you ride in normal conditions, the possibility of the freehub getting damaged is very low. If you ride in extreme conditions, we recommend you clean the freehub every 3000km.

Is there an internal nipple option?+

Internal nipples are not available because the nipples for carbon spokes are specially processed. The contact angle between spokes and spoke holes is extremely important. Spokes should not directly come into contact the rim directly, otherwise there would be a high likelihood of having spoke break.

Are brake pads included? Can I use brake pads from other brands?+

Yes, we will include two pairs of brake pads in the box of each rim brake wheelset. But the free brake pads are for general road conditions only. If you often do long downhill descending, we recommend upgrading them to SwissStop Flash EVO Black Prince brake pads, which have better brake performance and cooler temperatures. Please refer to this webpage for more information.

How to maintain rim brake wheels for longevity?+

Before every ride, inspect brake pads and the brake tracks, making sure they are clean and free of debris. Also ensure that the brake pads are centered. The brake pads that come with our rim brake wheelsets are for general road conditions only. If you often do long downhill descending, we recommend upgrading the brake pads to SwissStop Black Prince brake pads, which have better brake performance at cooler temperatures. Do not use brake pads not designed for carbon rims. When riding, use intermittent braking rather than braking continuously when descending to prevent overheating.

Which cassettes require the 1.85mm spacer?+

1.85mm spacers are required for Shimano 9/10-speed cassettes fitted on Shimano HG freehubs. Spacers are also required when pairing most SRAM XD MTB cassettes with SRAM XDR freehubs.

How do I check if my rim brake calipers are compatible Drive wheels?+

Please loosen the brake cable and measure the gap between the two brake pads. Please make sure there is at least 31mm clearance between the two brake pads to allow for adequate braking space. If there is sufficient space, insert the wheel with a tire on and ensure there is at least a 3mm gap between the tire and the frame and fork.

Are ceramic bearings easily broken?+

As all our our hubs have high-precision manufacturing tolerances, bearing play is significantly reduced. Because of this, the likelihood of bearings being damaged is extremely low.

What does the rider weight limit include?+

he rider weight limit includes the total weight of the rider, bike, gear, and any other accessories. Please do not exceed this weight.

What tire pressures should I run?+

The best tire pressure for you depends on many factors: the rim width, type of bike and tires, rider weight, road conditions and weather conditions. Please see our user guide for more information.

How strong are your carbon rims? What happens if I break one?+

Every one of our carbon rims has been strictly tested before shipment. We are so confident in the quality of our rims that we offer a 3-year warranty on every one. We also offer a crash replacement policy. To learn more, please refer to our warranty page.

Where can I find information on ordering and shipping?+

Please visit our FAQ page here.

Essential Safety Information+

For essential safety information, please read our Consumer Advice.

What happens if a carbon spoke breaks?+

Our threaded carbon spokes have been designed to last. In the event that a carbon spoke breaks, replacement is easy. Each wheel comes with replacement spokes that can be replaced like traditional steel spokes. For more information, please see this article. For information on where to get spokes replaced, please contact our customer service.

Are carbon spokes covered under warranty?+

Our standard 3-year warranty covers carbon spokes if they are damaged by non-external factors. This means they are only covered if there is a manufacturing defect. Click here for more information on our warranty.

I have rims worth 2-3 times this on other rim brake bikes and i can say these go head to head with weight, stiffness, and performance. Elite-wheels does a great job communicating back and forth making the purchase smooth and stress free. I purchased a 40v for the front and a 50v for the back for my italian colombus steel frame.
