Marvel 50D II

After years of research and development, our engineers have made advancements in maximizing a rim’s durability and responsiveness while reducing material, allowing for the next generation of Marvel wheels to be significantly lighter, despite increasing inner and outer rim widths to support wider tires.

The Marvel 50D II was designed to be an all-round wheelset, that performs well on the flats, hills, and mountains. The wheelset weighs just 1500 grams for the pair, making it a serious upgrade over alloy wheels for the amateur rider. The U/V-shaped rim profile improves lateral airflow, increasing stability on fast descents and in windy conditions.

In addition to optimizing the rim design, the second generation of Marvel wheels comes with several upgrades, namely ETRTO-compliant reduced hooks to offer better aerodynamics, comfort, and traction, Alpina Ultralight Aero spokes, and lighter rims.

RIMS

Marvel II wheelsets feature wider, 23mm inner widths and 31mm outer widths, making them aerodynamically optimized for 28c and 30c tires.  Wider tires allow for a more comfortable ride, as they can be run at lower pressures. The wider inner rim width gives wider tires a better shape, improving grip and comfort, while the 31mm external widths improve the overall aerodynamics when paired with 28mm or 30mm tires, which are now the norm in road cycling.

What makes our clincher, tubeless-ready rims unique is that we use a reduced hook design. We see the benefits and drawbacks of standard hooked as well as hookless rims and have found a way to offer the best of both worlds. Our ETRTO-compliant reduced hooks allow for the aerodynamic, durability, and optimal tire shape that hookless rims provide with the security, tire compatibility, and ability to run higher pressures that a clincher can offer.

PERFORMANCE HUB

The Marvel 50D II uses our Motion hub, which features pawls-ratchet freehub mechanism, that has been tried and tested by our sponsored UCI pro cycling teams in World Tour races like the UAE Tour. It offers low rolling resistance and excellent longevity.

Just like all of our other designs, the Motion hub is made by us using 5-axis CNC machines. High-grade precision S&S ceramic bearings were chosen to improve their lifespan and reduce rolling resistance, saving you precious watts. While having high quality bearings is important, a perfect bearing seat fit is essential for optimal performance. Our CNC machines precisely machine bearing seats to 0.02mm tolerances, guaranteeing exceptionally low rolling resistance and improving longevity.

SPOKES

The key to the weight reduction of Marvel II lies in the adoption of Alpina spokes, produced by the century-old Italian company Alpina Raggi. We are using Alpina Ultralight Aero steel spokes, which provide a significant weight savings over the last generation of Marvel wheels. They are some of the lightest racing spokes available, while offering added benefits such as excellent durability, longevity, and improved aerodynamics.

TESTING

At Elitewheels, we see value in ensuring what we offer not only performs well but has excellent durability and longevity. Each wheelset undergoes more than 20+ laboratory tests at our factory including various durability, longevity, and stiffness tests. We also ensure each wheel passes the UCI Vertical Impact Test, which gives the green light for wheels to be used at the top levels of professional racing.

Besides the laboratory tests, we put a strong emphasis on aerodynamic and real world testing. Our engineers run CFD (Computational Fluid Dyamics) programs for hundreds of hours during the design phase to aerodynamically optimize wheelsets before even producing the first prototype. After our engineering team is satisfied and the prototype is ready, we will collaborate with our sponsored UCI ProTeams for rigorous testing, getting as much feedback as possible. The pro riders offer a unique perspective due to their hundreds of thousands of kilometers of riding experience with a large number of wheelsets.

Which cassettes require the 1.85mm spacer?+

1.85mm spacers are required for Shimano 9/10-speed cassettes fitted on Shimano HG freehubs. Spacers are also required when pairing most SRAM XD MTB cassettes with SRAM XDR freehubs.

Can I use disc brake wheels on my QR (quick release) compatible frame?+

Yes. Please click the link and add the Thru-axles to QR Adapters to your cart with the wheelset.

Why don't our disc brake wheelsets come with thru-axles?+

Unlike quick releases, there are many thru-axle standards. What you need depends on your frame's make and model. There are many thread types, such as M12x1.0mm, M12x1.5mm, M12x1.75mm, etc... For example, M12 means the outer thread diameter is 12mm, and 1.0mm means the thread pitch is 1.0mm. Because of the variety of standards, we do not provide thru-axles. If you need a new thru-axle(s), please contact your frame brand for more information.

Is there an internal nipple option?+

No. Currently, Marvel series wheels do not have an internal nipple option.

Which brands’ freehubs are compatible with Marvel wheelsets?+

Since the hubs used in Marvel wheels are manufactured in Elitewheels’ factory, freehubs from other brands are incompatible. The hubs used in MARVEL wheels have passed our 20,000km test. As long as you ride in normal conditions, the possibility of the freehub getting damaged is very low. If you ride in extreme conditions, we recommend you clean the freehub every 3000km.

Are ceramic bearings easily broken?+

As all our our hubs have high-precision manufacturing tolerances, bearing play is significantly reduced. Because of this, the likelihood of bearings being damaged is extremely low.

Can I change to 6-bolt?+

Yes. The Marvel disc brake wheels use Centerlock compatible hubs by default, but if you want to use 6-bolt, please click the link and add the Centerlock to 6-bolt dapters to your cart with the wheelset.

What does the rider weight limit include?+

The rider weight limit includes the total weight of the rider, bike, gear, and any other accessories. Please do not exceed this weight.

What tire pressures should I run?+

The best tire pressure for you depends on many factors: the rim width, type of bike and tires, rider weight, road conditions and weather conditions. Please see our user guide for more information.

How strong are your carbon rims? What happens if I break one?+

Every one of our carbon rims has been strictly tested before shipment. We are so confident in the quality of our rims that we offer a 3-year warranty on every one. We also offer a crash replacement policy. To learn more, please refer to our warranty page.
