Shakey Isles Challenge 2025
Jan 10, 2024 @ 8:00 am - Jan 10, 2025 @ 5:00 pm

The Shakey Isles Challenge is an epic, self-supported bikepacking adventure that spans the entire length of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Beginning at the summit of Bluff Hill/Motupōhue in the Deep South, this grueling 3,010 km route winds its way north, finishing on the serene beach of Spirits Bay/Kapowairua in the Far North. Riders will traverse a diverse mix of terrain, including roughly 55% paved roads and 45% unpaved tracks, showcasing the breathtaking landscapes and rural charm of New Zealand.
Designed for gravel bikes, this fixed-route challenge is not for the faint-hearted, with a vertical climb totaling 44,500 meters. Riders are expected to navigate the course independently, with no support or assistance once the journey begins. The challenge emphasizes self-reliance and careful planning, as participants must be prepared to tackle any obstacles or route changes that may arise along the way.
The next Grand Depart is scheduled for 8 am on January 10, 2025, at Bluff Hill’s summit, where cyclists will embark on this monumental journey. While participation is open year-round, those seeking recognition for completing the challenge must sign up for GPS tracking through Maprogress.
With no entry fee, the event encourages riders to donate to local causes, such as the Bluff Hill Motupohue Environment Trust, adding a philanthropic element to this challenging adventure. The Shakey Isles Challenge offers cyclists an unparalleled opportunity to explore the full length of New Zealand’s rugged and varied landscape, testing both their endurance and spirit.
