Cycle to the Sun

The Cycle to the Sun is renowned as one of the toughest cycling climbs globally. This rigorous ride ascends over 10,000 feet across 36 miles, with inclines reaching 18%—far steeper compared to the Mont Ventou of the Tour de France, which rises 5,336 feet over 13.6 miles.

Starting from Pa’ia at sea level, the route culminates atop the Haleakala Volcano just above 10,000 feet. Originally launched in the 1980s, the event was revived in 2001 by Kalima O Maui, who purchased the rights to the race. Since 2008, the event has been managed by Go Cycling Maui and Maui Cyclery under the leadership of Donnie Arnoult. Arnoult, a Cat One professional racer and former owner of the Vegas Professional Cycling Team, marks his 11th year organizing this prestigious event. The 2018 edition was notably successful, drawing 200 participants.

Entry costs cover various necessary expenditures including fees to the National Park Service, EMS coverage, insurance, police services, porta-potties, and bike transport. Moreover, a portion of the proceeds benefits the Paia Youth & Cultural Center. This non-profit organization offers numerous activities and facilities for Maui’s youth, such as a skate park, radio station, and a multi-media lab.
