Knox Expedition: A Gravel Adventure Awaits!

Embrace the spirit of adventure with the Knox Expedition, an informal gravel ride that meanders through charming small towns, connecting gravel pathways with brief stretches of pavement. In its third edition, this event offers three distinct routes catering to various gravel cycling preferences: the challenging “Big Guns” route, the spirited “Rebellion” route, and the exhilarating “Siege” route.

All riders will commence from Berg Field in East Hartland as a group at the designated departure times. However, once on the road, cyclists are encouraged to find their own pace, as the ride is self-paced and self-supported. While camaraderie among riders is welcome, please understand that waiting at hilltops is not to be expected, although it might happen spontaneously.

Initially conceived as a gathering for a close-knit group of friends, the Knox Expedition’s desire to share this experience with more cyclists led to its expansion via BikeReg. This grassroots event focuses on the ride itself, eschewing pre-ride meals, SAG support, or aid stations. Participants can download the GPS route from RideWithGPS, keeping in mind that route markers will not be present on the course.

By participating, you acknowledge that although you may start in a group, each rider embarks on a solo, self-supported journey, responsible for their safety and return to the start/finish. Convenient stores along the route offer opportunities to refill bottles and stock up on snacks. While the terrain presents a challenge, it’s an attainable one. Routes to Explore

Big Guns Route

For the True Adventurers

Challenge your cycling prowess on the “Big Guns” route, an authentic test of your abilities. With extensive climbs (totaling 8450′ of ascent), substantial distance (92 miles), and a couple of rugged sections that were likely roads in a bygone era, this route is a true gem. The route has been meticulously redesigned based on rider input, emphasizing more “rough” dirt and less road. This 60% unpaved “double loop” route includes reliable food and water stops around miles 26, 57, and 63, though careful planning is necessary to ensure sufficient sustenance between stops. Expect a demanding day in the saddle, but you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring sights and the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.

Rebellion Route

Shorter, Not Less Exciting

Designed for those seeking the complete route’s challenge in a condensed package, the “Rebellion” route covers the southern loop of the “Big Guns” route. Trimming close to 3000′ of climbing (5800′ total) and over 20 miles of road (66.5 miles total), this route offers a balanced blend of beauty and excitement. Experience much of the same immaculate dirt trails and rugged gravel “roads” as the “Big Guns” route, all within a slightly shorter distance. Restock points at miles 25 and 37 ensure you’re ready for the journey. This 55% unpaved route offers a taste of adventure without compromising the challenge.

Siege Route

Optimal Gravel Adventure

The “Siege” route might be the shortest, but it certainly isn’t the least exciting. Covering 51% unpaved terrain, this abbreviated adventure (47 miles with 4100′ of climbing) encapsulates the essence of longer routes. Experience a brief rough section amidst a landscape of delightful unpaved roads, ensuring an unforgettable day on your bike. Restock at mile 25 guarantees you have the sustenance needed for your exhilarating journey.
