This prestigious one-day cycling event is one of the oldest events in the world and has a rich history that continues to attract many cycling enthusiasts.
History: Established in 1970, the Milan-San Remo cycle race has become a symbol of excellence in cycling. Its illustrious history is filled with legendary riders and unforgettable moments that have defined the evolution of professional cycling. The longest amateur cycling event in the world, with a distance of about 296 km, starts on the outskirts of Milan, crosses the plains of Lombardy and Piedmont, climbs Turcino and thus reaches the Ligurian Riviera. From Genoa, the route follows the Ligurian Sea to the finish line in Sanremo, which can only be reached by conquering the legendary Cipressa and Poggio di Sanremo first.
The non-competitive Milan-Sanremo cycle race was founded in 1970 by the Sanremo Cycling Federation and is Italy’s most famous bicycle tourism event.
The most recent edition of the competition attracted athletes from all over Europe, with participants also coming from such far-flung countries as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Brazil, the United States and Canada.
Race Overview: The Milan-San Remo race combines flat roads with tough climbs, and is a true test of endurance and strategy. Cyclists will tackle the famous Cipressa and Poggio climbs, and the dynamics of the race can change dramatically in the final kilometers. As competitors travel through the Liguria region, they will be surrounded by stunning landscapes, historic cities and rich local culture, turning the race into a cultural journey.
Route: Milano Sanremo Amatori The non-competitive race will start from the IBIS Style Settala hotel in Milan. After a flat section through Pavia and Voghera along the S35, competitors will leave Lombardy and enter Piedmont, passing through Tortona and Nova Ligure.
The runners will continue to Acqui Terme and from Sassello into Liguria, crossing the Giovo Pass to the Ponente coast at Albissola. From here, after about 200 km, they will take the Aurelia State Road in the direction of Sanremo.
From Albissola you’ll follow about 60 km of flat roads through the towns of Savona, Spotorno, Finale Ligure, Pietra Ligure and Albenga until you reach Alassio.
This series of three capes, Capo Mele, Capo Cervo and Capo Berta, will be the first Ligurian mountains to be conquered on this route, which will pass through the towns of Andora, Cervo, Diano Marina and Imperia.
The route will lead to San Lorenzo al Mare, with the last 30 km facing first the Cipressa climb (5.6 km with a gradient of 4.1%), then the Poggio di Sanremo climb (3.7 km with an average gradient of 3.7% and a peak of 8%) before finally descending to the finish line in San More.
