The Goats 2024

The Goats” is an epic cycling adventure set to take place from October 5th to 11th, 2024, in the breathtaking landscapes of Castelo Branco, Portugal. This demanding challenge covers approximately 740 kilometers with an elevation gain of 17,500 meters, and 70% of the route is off-road, making it a true test of endurance and skill.

Participants will embark on a circular journey through Portugal’s mountainous regions, including six distinct mountain ranges. The route connects with major Portuguese rivers and takes riders through varied and stunning terrains, culminating at the highest peak of mainland Portugal, Serra da Estrela, standing at 1993 meters. This challenge demands the utmost preparation and gear, but those who conquer it will feel invincible, having achieved something truly remarkable.

Checkpoint Highlights:

CP1 – Gardunha: The first significant climb of 9.6 km offers breathtaking views and a chance to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in Portugal. The climb is tough, but the southern and western views make it worthwhile.

CP2 – Lousã: The journey continues with a long ascent to the majestic Serra da Lousã, reaching an altitude of 1085 meters. The route includes a white gravel road that passes through a wind farm and leads to the charming schist village of Pena.

CP3 – Serra do Caramulo: Known for its granite and schist terrain, this area is rich in Roman history and features crystal-clear streams and lush green fields. The climb to Caramulinho, the highest point at 1076.57 meters, offers stunning views of the sea and Serra da Estrela.

CP4 – Serra da Estrela: The adventure culminates at the highest point in mainland Portugal. This natural park is the largest protected area in the country, known for its rugged landscape, unique rock formations, and rich pastoral heritage.

The route’s first 35 kilometers and the last 130 kilometers take place within the Serra da Estrela natural park, offering participants incredible views and a memorable end to their journey.
